As of Wednesday (October 15), Craigslist will begin charging $25 for job postings in 8 new cities: Atlanta, Austin, Dallas, Denver, Houston, Miami (South Florida), Philadelphia, and Phoenix. The company previously has charged for job ads in Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, NYC, Orange County, Portland, Sacramento, Seattle, San Diego, San Francisco Bay Area, and Washington DC.
Details are here, along with Craigslist user commentary on the move. Predictably, there’s plenty of outcry mixed with support for the move, which is designed to rid the jobs area of those Craigslist sites of scammers, spammers, and abuse.
As always, Craigslist portrays the move as designed to improve the quality of the service, not to make more money for itself. As explained in the note to users: “We have received a lot of feedback over the last couple months, which has generally run in favor of a $25 per ad fee for posting jobs in these eight cities.”
The fee applies only to job postings, while the “Gigs” categories will remain free; those are for posting “smaller projects, odd jobs, low budget film gigs, openings for personal attendants, etc.”
For newspapers and other classifieds publishers in those 8 new cities, this probably means more downward price pressure on paid recruitment ads. When a city’s Craigslist job listings have been filled with lots of junk, a newspaper can tout the quality of the recruitment-advertising experience and (perhaps) get away with charging higher fees. With an improved Craigslist job section, publishers in those 8 cities now need to re-evaluate their pricing if they expect to be competitive.

Craiglist is a great resource, but we are in a recession/depression, and now is not the time to raise prices for employment listings. We should be lowering prices for this type of service to encourage posting.
One thing that I also want to point out is that it is time that sites/companies that charge communities for listing give something back to those communities.
At adelph.us all classified listing are $5 and part of the revenue is donated to community causes

I’m glad that Craigslist will be charging $25.00 to post ads for jobs. Even though it is a hard economic time It will keep spammers off of posting ads and also fake jobs/fake posts. The only thing I hope and wish it will require with this fee is that Employers would be required to show their business information so potential employees applying for the jobs can follow up with the job to see that they received the information and get their interviews lined up. It is extreamly frustrating on Craigslist that makes it an option to put a generic email to a job posting and not being able to follow up!!
Even though a lot of job that I look for are professional and extremely reliable it give people an uneasy feeling when a potential employee trying to find a job and sends their info to a generic craigslist email. I know a lot of employers don’t like getting calls to see if they received our info for the job posting and setting up interviews but that is part of the process for employees to follow up and set up interviews.
PLEASE MAKE IT SO EMPLOYERS POSTING JOB ADS HAVE AND MUST PROVIDE THEIR COMPANY INFORMATION, PHONE NUMBER ETC….. SO POTENTIAL EMPLOYEES CAN CONTACT THE EMPLOYERS!!! PLEASE NO MORE GENERIC CRAIGSLIST EMAILS FOR JOB POSTS!!!

I think it sucks that south FL is now forced to pay $25 to run a want ad. Anyone with a half a brain already knows how to sift thru the garbage JOBS, anyway. Now under ETC, I’m lucky to any service available besides EGG DONORS. SHEEESH!!! hAVEN’T seen practically anything posted IN DAYS!!!

They need to do this in Las Vegas, too. There are so many fake jobs posted and it’s ridiculous. I’m looking for a job and have sent over 70 resumes in. I have a clean criminal and driving record and still NOTHING. I have a feeling that these posts are from people that think it’s funny to fuck with the unemployed or scammers looking for personal information. Come on, Craigslist. Start charging a fee here, too.

I am a small biz owner who uses CL for most of my marketing and for potential employees I may hire. I loved the idea of this simple site free for us to use. Maybe they should put some kind of checks and balances against those who post to ensure they are legit or a vetting process whereby we could get ‘whitelisted’ and a link on the site to report a fake job for the job seekers. This seems like it would reduce fake jobs, spammers, etc, and also allow businesses who are legit to continue tom post for free. If I have to pay $25 to post a job opening I have to help someone in these times I am not going to use CL, instead I would use the local newspaper. I think this is a bad move on their part, especially in these trying times.

On Flakelist.org & Newsvine.com I posted an “Open Letter To Craigslist”, suggesting they charge A BUCK for a Help Wanted ad everywhere besides the high-priced area. I think that’ll help weed out the bottom-feeders that hide behind blind ads & Gmail addresses on CraigsList.

In the past I used CL to post jobs for a well known hotel chain here in Austin, Tx.
Now that CL charges $25.00 we will not be using CL for job postings. We already have a forum for listing jobs, and used CL anyway as it helped to spread the word. Sad to say, but no more.
